The Magnetic Fields, a sampler.

The Magnetic Fields

Oy, you, you with your twee garb on, it's time to get back to the roots.  Camera Obscura is nice and all but you can't ignore these guys.  Here's a few tunes to get you started and/or reacquainted.

1. "The Saddest Story Ever Told" - The Wayward Bus

Nicely lo-fi, modest pop beat, and lamentation.  The Magnetic Fields in a nutshell.

2. "Torn Green Velvet Eyes" - Holiday

If anything, it's Merritt's voice that I find the most appealing out of anyone from his cast of vocal characters.  I also like the song title.

3. "Fear of Trains" - The Charm of the Highway Strip

Considerably faster paced than most of the group's songs, this is one of my many favorites from an album that gives you a coat of road dust on the ears.

I haven't even gotten into Get Lost (excellent) or 69 Love Songs (just buy it) yet, but these are the Magnetic Fields I thoroughly enjoy and it's all you need to embrace a taste of their excellence.
