Upcoming Shows News (Subcategories: I am Poor; I am Old.)

In ‘wish I had some money’ touring news, it looks like Massive Attack are going to start touring in the late summer/early fall, ending up in Boston on October 1, at the Orpheum Theatre.

Honestly, I think that Orpheum is kind of a weird place in general, and it seems like an even stranger place for a band like Massive Attack to play.  If the White Stripes can play the Opera House, shouldn’t Massive Attack?  I feel like if you’re Guster and your fans are all fried and 12 years old, the Orpheum and its crappy acoustics and scary wobbly balcony are fine, but Massive Attack’s sound is infinitely more nuanced than what I think the Orpheum can comfortably support.  Not sure when tickets go on sale for that one...

And another one of my favorite bands, Phoenix, is coming through and opening for the French Kicks on August 9 at the Paradise. Phoenix has just released a new album, It’s Never Been Like That, which is fantastic, and their live show is amazingly energetic and totally kick-ass. Doug likes the French Kicks, so obviously they’re worth checking out, but this is one show where you should absolutely not be fashionably late.

Other shows that are of interest: Muse at the Pavilion on 8/2, and Gnarls Barkley at Avalon on 8/11 (yeah, I’m sure it’ll be a piece of cake to get tickets to that one!).  Friends of AP Hooray for Earth (formerly Raymond) are opening for Mission of Burma at the Paradise on 7/13, so be sure to check that show out!

And since I kicked this entry off with an ‘I’m poor’ comment, it’s only fair to close it with an ‘I’m old’ whine.  Why am I old?  Oh, because on 8/4, Soul Asylum will be playing the Paradise (which is cool) as part of the VH1 Classics tour.  Yeeeeah.

"Runaway Train"... live?! Woohoo! Well no, no biggie. Thanks to the overplay on the radio years ago I've memorized that song. Save your money, I'll sing it live on a street corner in Davis Square sometime.
