My Space (To Show You My Fabulous Taste In Music)
I came to Myspace after it was cool, but stalking people online never goes out of style. Wait-let me start again. One of my favorite features on Myspace is the Profile Song. The visual contents of my page aren't enough for friends and neighbors to get an accurate picture of my soul-I NEED to express myself through the music of others. Months ago, when I struggled for days trying to figure out what was wrong with my upload of Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" on my page, I had to contemplate showing my internet audience a shade of my true self via some other runner-up track. Here's a smattering of recent Profile songs:
"When You Were Young" - The Killers: Me and about 7,000 other people have this song on our profiles right now. Brandon Flowers gives you a glimpse into my world of missed chances and nostalgia...at least until Springsteen gets himself an official Myspace page with some sweet downloads (and don't give me that Seeger Sessions nonsense). Hot Fuss was practically glued to my ears a few summers ago, so hopefully Sam's Town bursts an eardrum or twelve when it arrives in October.
"We In Here" - DMX: The greatest of the recent batch of DMX comeback tracks (from the recently released Year Of The Dog, Again...yep, that's the title) this song makes me want to buy a car, put hydraulics and a sweet speaker system in it, light it on fire, and drive slowly down Mass Ave, Sadly, it clashes a bit with my current state of mind-this is more of a July "WOOO SUMMER" track than an August "Why am I at work and not at the beach?!" reality check. Best line: "I'll pull up on ya block and turn your white teeth burgundy."
"Lay, Lady, Lay" - Bob Dylan: Bob Dylan is my #1 Myspace friend, knocking Andrew WK out of the top spot (sorry boss-it's been ages since I Get Wet, and Dylan still brings the noise). Too bad the man's label is too paranoid to put more than track snippets on Bobb-O's page. I don't do anything half-assed (except, um, everything), so the sample had to go. Nevertheless, I only recently snagged Nashville Skyline, and once you get over Bob's vocals, you realize that you don't know how you ever loved and lived without this record.
"Bang Bang You're Dead" - Dirty Pretty Things: This is the band by the other guy from The Libertines-you know, the one who only gets hammered and smashes things. And while I'm sure this song can be read as a Pete Doherty diss track or whatever, it's also a great song on its own merits (does that even mean anything?!). The rest of the Myspace musical selections don't make me want to rush out and grab Waterloo To Anywhere, but I'm interested enough to maybeprobably check out the boys when they hit Great Scott on August 13th (this Sunday!).
