Nina Gordon - Bleeding Heart Graffiti

Bleeding Heart Graffiti is undeniably pretty, but it's also pretty boring. Gordon's second solo album finds her sounding more than ever like Aimee Mann, with a lot of the "stately" tempos of Mann's recent albums. But Gordon dosn't have Mann's talent for wordplay or writing in character, and far too many of these songs are generic and obvious enough that they could be the background music for almost any scene in the teen TV drama of your choice. All these criticisms also apply to, say, "Loneliness is Worse" from Gordon's old band Veruca Salt, but the difference is that Gordon's old records were played (and produced) with more sharp teeth showing, so even songs that weren't especially hooky could benefit from the drama of sheer sonic bombast. There are some distorted power chords on Bleeding Heart Graffiti, but they're used like cake icing, for decorative purposes only -- this is just not an album about which you're going to say, "it rocks." And not every album has to rock, of course, but this one is so polite and well-mannered that it leaves almost no impression at all.

I hear ya on the 'no impression' bit... I have a feeling a few albums I'm giving a listen to caused that two-worder to float in my head. This must mean that I need to listen to the albums more, eh?

Not necessarily...sadly, a lot of these albums (like 85%) just are what they are -- a vehicle for one, maybe two good songs that are only good because they sound like what a better band has already done well. (In Ms. Gordon's case, I think "Turn on Your Radio" is cute and catchy, and a nice showcase for her pleasantly inoffensive voice, but again...this song has been done better only a few hundred times.)

I forget what book this is from, but I remember the line of dialogue -- no one's asking anyone to make it a sow's ear into a silk purse -- just make it the best sow's ear it can be.

Thanks Jess, I'm going to use a sow's ear rating system for my reviews from now on. Decent stuff with a catchy tune or two? 3 and a half sow's ears!
