Kings of Leon -- not as awesome as your hipster friends tell you!!

This is completely a off the cuff entry, but the new Kings of Leon disc that is getting rave reviews from everyone from Rolling Stone to the crazy lady who collects cans in the shopping cart at the grocery store?  Is really not that good.

I was sitting here at the computer, and had no idea what was playing in the background, and my first thought was, "Hmmmm, I didn't know Vic Chestnutt put out a new album." Followed shortly by, "Hmmm.  That's sad.  When did Vic Chestnutt start sucking?"

After I inquired after the alarming screams on one of the tracks, Justin told me it was the new Kings of Leon, and then I wondered why everyone was all up in arms about this CD.   Because it's not awesome.

Now we are listening to The Good, the Bad and the Queen, and it is much better.

You DON'T like the Kings of Leon disc?? Get back in the herd!

They were fun live, though.

hmmm...I have only read glowing, fawning reviews of the album thus far.

Did you see them recently, or was this when they were flagrantly riding MMJ's Southern-rock-revival coattails?

I actually haven't heard the disc, but if people are 'fawning' over it then it's gotta be bad. I don't think I've fawned over an album since 'Ok Computer'... maybe Built to Spill's latest one qualifies. I'll have to take a listen sometime.

Saw them a few years ago opening for the Coral. Perhaps coattails were involved, perhaps John Fogerty was rolling his eyes somewhere, dunno.

Wait. When were the Kings of Leon good? Did I miss something?

While I'm asking questions: When was the last time RollingStone got something right?

Ok, no more questions...

JN! How are you? You've probably long forgotten me, but it's Phil. I formerly wrote for this reviewing establishment of yours, smattering my opinions with pretentious words like "quotidian" and "gossamer."

Anyway, I just wanted to say hello and tell you that the new site looks good. I've also been listening to some stunning records like Panda Bear's "Person Pitch" and The Twilight Sad's "Fourteen Autumns and Fifteen Winters."

Also, I believe The National's forthcoming "Boxer" is, in reality, a perfect record. Thoughts?
