QOTSA: "Era Vulgaris"
Queens of the Stone Age
Era Vulgaris
Notable tracks include “Battery Acid,” where the scruffy production gives some additional depth, the smoove-R&B-send-up of “Make It Witchu” (Homme does a nice falsetto…and it’s just as good as you’re imagining right now), the cool vocals of “Misfit Love,” and the runaway freight-train sex of “Sick, Sick, Sick.”
Bottom line: There’s nothing new here, but if it ain’t broke, why fix it?

i find it interesting that you feel era v. sounds the same as earlier qotsa material. it's definitely got the 'feel' of a qotsa album but it seems more focussed on the quirkier material of the past such as "millionaire" than the majority of their other material. i'm trying to think of a song on this album that sounds 'just like' or 'really similar' to past songs and it's hard to do (for me at least).
also, this album grows on you. my first reaction was that there were 3-4 strong songs that i liked and the rest were ok. but i kept listening and now i really feel this album is very powerful. in a way i think homme is trying to make the music ugly, dischordant; i feel like they're reaching for something greater and definitely not playing it safe; which is respectable. but it doesn't have the immediate easy-to-grasp vibe of much of the earlier albums. there's a lot of stuff happening that is best described as weird. but to me that's cool cause that's growth.
but, yeah please don't take my disagreement as disrespect. i'm glad you wrote about the album as i've wondered people's opinions. but, if you really do like qotsa you may only find yourself Loving this album on it's 4th play--then you won't stop playing it for a long long time.
