Boston's Tulsa Blowing Up All Over This Piece
Tulsa is feeling some love from many corners of the universe on the eve of their latest EP release, I Was Submerged, which lands/drops/descends on October 9th via Park The Van. Even this very blog post seems obligated to give the boys some free advertorializing: it's because they're that good. I've seen Carter Tanton and his posse a bunch of times over the past year, and every gig has been chock-full of atmospheric guitar distortions and Tanton's gripping, haunting-in-a-friendly-ghost-but-not-really-sort-of-way singing.
In my new issue of Rolling Stone (suckered into a Best-Buy related sub / too lazy to unsubscribe / I like Matt Taibbi and the features / Austin Scaggs can die / this concludes my defense of my RS sub) David Fricke gives some space up to prop some props up, comparing the band to My Morning Jacket (vocalizing) and "the 1968-69 Byrds" (guitarifying). Evidently RS doesn't re-publish this bit of the rag online, so you'll just have to take my word for it. The new ish does feature a long ad for new RS-approved book Hunter S. Thompson retrospective feature, so it's worth picking up for that if you like that sort of thing.
LOcaL Cats may have noticed the band's cover mugging on this week's Boston Phoenix as well: check out the flattering / on-the-nose profile if you missed it. You also get a free mp3 (of "Shaker," one of the band's best songs) and a peek at a music video for your troubles.
This post is really just here to direct the uninformed to Tulsa prior to their gig at the Middle East Upstairs this Tuesday: the mighty Helms is playing as well, so you have two great reasons to show up to work all groggy on Hump Day. Hats and Glasses rounds out the trifecta of performing musiclectrics: I've never seen them, but what they got there on that Myspace location sounds like a good poppy time. It's also the last chance to catch the headliners in town for a while, so don't miss out.
