Soundtrack Pick: "I'm Not There" / Other Random Notes

My relationship with Bob Dylan has been pretty neutral; I like what I'm supposed to like, and I'm largely indifferent to the rest of his work (all 9,000 albums of it).  However, the soundtrack to the movie I'm Not There (two discs of Dylan covers) is so good that it's made me interested in looking up the originals.

Some standouts: Jim James's soulful "Goin' to Alcapulco" (w/Calexico); "I'm Not There" (with Thurston Moore's signature gravelly vocal contribution); "Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again" through the smooth voice of Cat Power; Charlotte Gainsbourg's surprising turn on "Just Like a Woman" (w/ Calexico); and the Hold Steady's "Can You Please Crawl out Your Window?".

Haven't seen the movie (although I've heard it's quite good), but these two discs kept me alert and interested all the way through....

In other news, I simply cannot get enough of Girltalk's Nightripper.  It is so awesome it defies words, and it could very well be the dirtiest thing I ever heard.  It is a most complicated mash-up, where the most varied of songs (think "Magic" by Pilot [the song that goes 'oh ho ho it's magic/you know / never believe it's not so'] with "Goldigger" by Kanye West) are combined to make a whole new pop song.  We're talking like ten or fifteen different samples per new 'song.' Worth every penny you spend on it (you can't get it on iTunes, but try www.7digital.com).
